Steven Michael Matteson

In Loving Memory of: Steven Michael Matteson

January 24, 1972 – May 28, 2025

Steven Michael Matteson, Steve, 53, born in Bakersfield, California to Mary Matteson, passed away on May 28, 2025, surrounded by family. Steve spent some of his early childhood years in Oregon before moving to Bakersfield at a very young age. He was lovingly raised by his Aunt Audrey Jean, whom he called "Mom," who played a central role in his upbringing.

Steve found his soulmate Kerri, a partnership forged in love and a shared zest for life. They were married in 1996, and a year later, sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. Their relationship was built on spontaneity and an unwavering willingness to embrace whatever "crazy adventure" Mom cooked up. Both were last-minute planners, always game for any new experience that came their way. This shared spirit of adventure and their deep devotion to each other made them truly a perfect pair.

Steve was a man of many talents, a true “jack of all trades,” and he took great pride in all the work he could do. And if he didn’t know how to do it, he always found out how to do it. Over the years, he operated several successful businesses, including a locksmith company, a mechanic service, limo driver, and a food truck demonstrating his entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to serving his community. His hands were always busy, whether he was fixing a car, helping someone in need, or offering his skills to those around him.

Steve loved to cook, he would always be the last one to make his plate—wanting to see the reactions of his loved ones as they tasted his food. He took immense pride in his cooking and would often ask, with a grin, "How much would you pay for that?" His meals were a reflection of his generous spirit, always served with care and a side of humor.

He had a successful locksmith business and made the difficult but loving decision to leave his business to help care for his mother-in-law, Kathleen, after she was left paralyzed in a serious accident. He devoted ten years to her care, a testament to his profound compassion and commitment to family.

Steve’s greatest joy came from his family and God. He served in many church callings in his church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. From primary teacher, bishopric, to his most recent calling as the first counselor in his Stake Young Men’s. He is survived by his beloved wife, Kerri, his children Keyana, Zurel, Labrea, Zyron, Zavion, David Sanchez, and Skyler Smith. As well as his two cherished grandchildren, Micah Sanchez and Benjamin Smith. His siblings Peggy Mergil, Billy Matteson, Mary Woolsey and Malorie Matteson; and many other loving relatives and friends. His legacy of love, strength, and devotion to his family will live on in all of them.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Audrey Jean and John Matteson, as well as his biological mother, Mary Matteson. His mother-in-law, Kathleen Peterson; his brother, John Matteson; and his nephews, Christopher Woolsey and Michael Matteson.

A celebration of life will be held June 7, 2025 at 10am at 3175 S 3450 W, West Valley City, UT 84120. All friends and family are welcome.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to assist with final expenses and family support during this difficult time. Contributions can be made via GoFundMe or Venmo to @keyanamsmith
