Jim Jones, a devoted husband and father, hardworking provider, and backyard visionary, passed away surrounded by his family on February 19, 2025, at the age of 86. Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on September 15, 1938, Jim dedicated over 40 years of his life to Reliable Waste System/Waste Management, where he built a reputation for his steadfast work ethic and loyalty.
For 68 wonderful years, he was the beloved husband of Johnnye Jones, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and unwavering commitment. His greatest wish was to reach their 70th anniversary, and he fought with every ounce of strength to make that dream a reality.
Jim took immense pride in his home, transforming his backyard into a personal oasis, a true resort where family, friends, and neighbors gathered to make memories. Whether it was summer afternoons by the pool, evening barbecues, or the laughter of children and grandchildren filling the air, he found joy in creating a space where others could find happiness.
He was always helping everyone and loved fixing things, always having a project to work on. Jim had many passions that filled his life with joy. He loved feeding his hummingbirds, always making sure they had the very best nectar, rain or shine. His dogs were his best friends, especially his beloved Rottweilers, Apollo, Diego, and Bear. He found excitement in trips to Idaho for the lotto, always saying, “You’re never going to win if you don’t play.”
Christmas was a magical time for Jim, and he took great pride in having the most festive house on Bountiful Blvd. He spent hours creating a Santa’s Workshop window display that could rival the legendary ZCMI Christmas windows. He also had a deep appreciation for gardening, growing vegetables, and joyfully sharing his harvest with family and friends.
Jim’s mornings weren’t complete without a cup of coffee with his buddies, and he had a soft spot for Hallmark movies. He cherished his cabin and fishing trips, finding peace and adventure in the great outdoors.
Jim’s legacy is one of dedication, love, and a deep appreciation for life’s simple yet meaningful moments. His presence will be deeply missed but forever cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Jim is survived by his wife, Johnnye; his children, Jerry (Pat), Jennifer (Rob), Justin (Jen), Jami (Steve), and Jimmie Jr. (Alli); 18 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren; his sister, Cherie Jones, and his Rottweiler, Bear. He is preceded in death by his son, Jeff.
The family would like to thank the nurses, CNAs, and doctors at IMC, The Huntsman Cancer Institute, and the University of Utah Hospital. A special thank you to Inspired Funeral Home for helping make this process easier in our time of grief.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at Chase Mill, Tracy Aviary, where family and friends can honor his memory and share the stories that made him so special.
