Jean Ujifusa

Jean Ujifusa was born and grew up  in Chicago, Illinois. While travelling to California, she met Howell Ujifusa the love of her life in Salt Lake City.  He proposed to her on their second date and continued daily until she said yes. They had to travel outside of Utah to be married due to laws on interracial marriage. Jean and Howell were soulmates for 53 years raising a family of four in the Millcreek and Federal Heights neighborhoods. Lovingly known as  “Omi” by her cherished grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchild she passed away peacefully on November 23, 2024, at the age of 94. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Howell.  

She is survived by her children David (Caryn), Lisa (Stan), Mark  (Karla), and Glen (Shele), and her brother William Walker.

Jean was a woman of curiosity and joy. She constantly sought beauty in the world around her,  always learning and exploring.  Her talents were vast—cooking, sewing,  gardening, painting, jewelry-making, glass sculpture, and pottery. Jean’s creativity knew no bounds, and she inspired  
everyone to embrace their own passions.  

Jean was an avid traveler, fashionable, and always current on pop culture. Her sense of humor was sharp and loving, making friends wherever she went.  

Above all, Jean’s love for her family was her greatest joy. She made each person feel special, known, and deeply loved.  

Jean also had a compassionate heart and was always attuned to the needs of others. She taught those around her to look outward with kindness—whether taking a less fortunate stranger to breakfast or packing warm homemade lunches for school children in need. These were some 
of her traditions she cherished. 

Jean’s spirit of generosity and love will live on in all who knew her.

A private celebration of life will be held.
